World Piano Day is a global celebration of the piano that takes place on the 88th day of each year – 88 being the number of keys on a piano. Celebrating the instrument which has inspired musicains, composers, artist, and performers for generations.
Piano Day was founded by Nils Frahm in 2015. While still a relatively new concept, Piano Day has grown in reach and popularity year on year, with performances organised worldwide for the day.

Kawai Pianos
Did you know that Kawai has been crafting pianos for almost 100 years?
Koichi Kawai, Kawai’s founder, pioneered Japanese piano design and manufacturing. He was the first in Japan to design and build a complete piano action. In 1927 he formed Kawai Musical Instrument Research Laboratory in Hamamatsu, Japan. Kawai pianos quickly grew in popularity as they developed a reputation as Japan’s highest quality piano, and in 1953, Koichi Kawai was honoured with the “Blue Ribbon Medal” (褒章, hōshō, Medal of Honor) from the Emperor of Japan, as recognition of his “remarkable talent, innovative contributions and master craftsmanship”.
Throughout Kawai’s almost 100-year history, we have remained a family-owned and operated company. Koichi’s son, Shigeru Kawai, became president of Kawai after his father’s passing. Shigeru is credited with opening Kawai operational branches around the globe, making Kawai pianos more accessible for everyone. When Shigeru’s son, Hirotaka Kawai, took over as president, he pledged to carry on the commitment to excellence established by his father and grandfather. Early in his tenure as president, Hirotaka invested tens of millions of dollars to incorporate advanced robotics in the production process.
In 2024, Kentaro Kawai became the fourth president of Kawai. The 4th generation of Kawai family leadership. Inheriting the founder’s spirit and philosophy of piano craftsmanship, and built upon the foundations laid by our great predecessors, artisans and technicians, the company has expanded beyond musical instrument manufacturing into fields such as education and material processing.
